On 14 May, the Argentine President, Mauricio Macri, visited the United Arab Emirates, where he held a bilateral meeting with the Emir of Dubai and UAE Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

The President and the Emir agreed on the excellent status of bilateral relations, which opens up great possibilities for increasing trade between the two countries, specially in food safety (the Emirates import 80% of their food), investments in Argentina and cooperation in the energy field, including both traditional and renewable energy, tourism, sports, science and technology. To this end, they agreed to establish a bilateral economic committee to plan concrete projects. They also underscored the importance of the prompt entry into force of the Agreement on Avoidance of Double Taxation, the Bilateral Investments Treaty and the Agreement on Visa Waiver for Holders of Ordinary Passports.

President Macri expressed his hope that there soon can be direct flights between Argentina and the UAE, which would help to cement bonds and communications between the two countries, both for businesspersons and for tourists.

The President was joined by the President of the House of Representatives, Emilio Monzó; the Governors of the Provinces of Río Negro and San Juan, Alberto Weretilneck and Sergio Uñac, respectively; the Minister of Finance, Luis Caputo; the Minister of Energy, Juan José Aranguren; the Minister of Transport, Guillermo Dietrich; the Secretary for Strategic Affairs, Fulvio Pompeo, and the Undersecretary for Foreign Relations, Gustavo Zlauvinen.
